I watched an awful expose on "Class B" animal dealers on HBO.  Just to explain for those who haven't heard the term, as I had not till last night:

What Class B dealers are:

The are licensed by the USDA (basically $10 and an application) of animals of sourced animals of known origin, but not bred by the dealers (that would be a Class A dealer) for the purpose of resale to research labs mainly.

What they should be doing:

A class B dealer should know where the animal is coming from, mainly that it was not a stolen pet but rather an unwanted stray (from the pound), or an owner surrender.

What they are actually doing:

The buy dogs/cats for an average of $15 a head from "bunchers" basically animal thieves from peoples cars/yards/neighborhoods and collectors of strays off the street.

To make matters much worse:

Before the animals make it to their ill fated destinations of a lab, the undergo awful and sometimes deadly treatment at the dealers kennels. Not fed, abused, crowded, left in fight or die (or both)situations.

Anyway, class A, B whatever it makes me sick. I really have a lesser and lesser tolerance level anymore for the scums that consider themselves humans yet are so far from it. I always thought that as you get older you get desensitized but for me it couldn't farther from the truth when it comes to inhumanity of any kind. I am downright sick of what people will do for money.

There's been some recent legislation dealing with this. There's a group out of California supported by Pam Anderson and other celebrities that is affiliated with PETA- they have news on it, but I can't recall the name. Also, the HSUS mailing list will keep you apprised of this stuff.
